SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- A South Bay family is mourning the loss of two of its members after a suspected drunk driver is accused of taking the lives of an elderly woman and her daughter in a Santa Clara crash.

The crash happened on Great America Parkway in front of Our Lady of Peace.

The two women were leaving our lady of peace in Santa Clara with their loved ones when a car exiting Northbound 101 near Great America Parkway slammed into their car head on. Both women were in the back seat and died.

CHP officers say the driver who hit them was drunk.

The coroner's office identified the women as 61 year old Carina Kubow and her 92-year-old mother Angela Bontilao of San Jose.

The son and brother posted a photo and tribute to them on Facebook expressing their devastation. They had been visiting various churches for Holy Thursday, and had just left the service at our lady of peace.

"We heard all the noises and the ambulances and the fire trucks coming. Myself and the Father went close to the accidents and Father was able to get to the place. Unfortunately the two ladies passed away," Mother Superior Maria De la Caridad said.

The priest told his congregation about the crash, and offered a prayer for the women. The two other relatives in the car suffered moderate injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital with major injuries. Officers identified him as 26 year old Vinod Kumar Bonthu. He was arrested for felony DUI, and vehicular manslaughter.
