VALLEJO, Calif. (KGO) -- A 10-year-old girl is recovering after being hit by a stray bullet at West Oakland's Lowell Park over the weekend.

Alyssa showed off her sling, decorated with stickers and get well wishes, to ABC7 News on Monday. It's covering a gunshot wound she got on Saturday.

Alyssa's family is scared because her shooter is still out there.

"It was just like the worst thing ever that could happen in my life," said the victim's mother, Margrette Davis. "Every time I start to talk about it I start to cry because I would never want anybody to go through what I went through. How any child getting shot, it's just crazy."

The young girl was celebrating her cousin's first birthday party, when across the park, two groups started shooting at each other.

"It sounded like loud, loud fireworks," Alyssa said. "We ran, I was scared. I didn't know what to do, so I just ran when all the other people ran, too."

The 10-year-old was treated at Children's Hospital Oakland and was released on Sunday.

Police said the kids were playing on the grass near 14th St. when bullets started flying from the other end of the park near 12th St. and Filbert St. They're investigating the possibility of a drive-by.

"We need and want to have our children safe in our community and when they become a victim of a violent crime such as a shooting, that's not OK," Oakland Police Dept. spokesperson Johnna Watson said.

Watson said the police department immediately sent officers to the scene and have been patrolling the area ever since, interviewing people who might have seen something.

The park was empty on Monday. Police have made no arrests and hope surveillance video from the neighborhood will lead them to who's responsible.

Alyssa said she's still in some pain, but won't let it ruin her summer vacation.
