SportsCenter, 'E:60' among winners
ESPN Inc. took home seven Sports Emmy Awards Monday night in New York City, including first-ever statuettes for two ESPN Deportes studio shows and ESPN's "30 for 30" film series.
ESPN Deportes' two awards in the first year of Spanish-language categories were for Best Studio Show categories SportsCenter and Nacion. In another first, "30 for 30" landed the award for Outstanding Sports Documentary Series.
ESPN's newsmagazine, "E:60," also won an award for Outstanding News Journalism for "Children of the Ring," a look by Jeremy Schaap at the human rights issues surrounding the growing sport of children's professional Muay Thai fighting in Thailand. It was E:60's sixth Sports Emmy in five years.
NBC Sports Group led the way with 10 awards Monday night, followed by five each for Fox and HBO. TNT followed with three awards.
The World Series between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals reaped Fox two Emmys, including live sports special, while Chris Collinsworth was named top sports event analyst for his NFL work at NBC. Bob Costas won the award for Outstanding Sports Personality -- Studio Host for his work at NBC and MLB Network.
Among ESPN's other wins were a 16th SportsCenter laurel for "Richie Parker: Drive" in the Short Feature category, a 10th award for the X Games in the Live Graphic Design category, as well as best weekly studio show recognition for College Gameday -- Football.
Overall, ESPN has won 160 Sports Emmy Awards in 27 years of eligibility.
