A family of five and a family of two were displaced after a car crashed into a single-story duplex apartment building early Sunday morning in Union City, a fire department spokeswoman said.

Firefighters responded at 12:55 a.m. to a report of a vehicle driving into a building on the 3700 block of Horner Street, said Aisha Knowles, a spokeswoman for the Alameda County Fire Department.

Just before the car drove into the duplex, a pickup truck crashed into a bus stop nearby and then came to rest on the lawn of the duplex, according to Knowles.

The firefighters arrived at the duplex to find the badly damaged pickup truck on the lawn and a BMW automobile completely inside the heavily damaged duplex, Knowles said.

The occupants of the vehicles fled. The Union City Police Department located one of them, Knowles said.

Miraculously, no one was hurt, she said. The family of five was awake and watching TV at the time and got out of the way just in time, Knowles said.

The firefighters heard the crash even before the incident was reported because there is a fire station in the immediate area, Knowles said.

The Red Cross helped the family of five, two adults and three adult children, with temporary shelter, she said. The other family, made up of two adults, got help from local family members.
