Churches throughout Oakland and the East Bay all took time to remember the victims of the fire.


OAKLAND, Calif. - Churches throughout Oakland and the East Bay all took time to remember the victims of the fire. Prayers went out for their families as well as the Oakland community which is in mourning.

There wasn't a church in Oakland that didn't mention the victims of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire this morning. Prayers went out for their families as well as the Oakland community which is in mourning.

Saint Elizabeth Church is only a few blocks from the deadly warehouse fire. Today's mass was dedicated to those who died and their families.

"Their pain in many ways is our pain too. The loss of these young people is the loss of all of us," said Father Martin Jose Ibarra.

For many, it was a time to realize that nothing in life is guaranteed.

"We're not promised tomorrow so we have to live each day and just hope that we make it," said Danette Truso, parishioner

While people were leaving flowers near the site of the fire, Oaklanders like Mike Teeling found solace in their place of worship.

"It was important to come and reflect and mourn, come together as a community," said Teeling.

At the Cathedral of Christ the Light, there was a moment of silence for the victims.

"Could that have been prevented but that's another conversation because at this moment as we're discovering more bodies that were lost in that fire, that our hearts and out thoughts must go out to the families," said Fr. Jay Matthews, Cathedral of Christ the Light.

Mayor Libby Schaaf reached out to the Oakland Diocese asking that a vigil be held tomorrow at the Cathedral of Christ the Light. Monday's vigil will be from 6-7 p.m.
