Suspect arrested in V-Day stabbing

RICHMOND, CA

Robert Perez, 41, was arrested at a Richmond residence at about 9:30 p.m. Friday, Rood said.

He is being held without bail at the Martinez Detention Facility, a county jail official said.

Police were alerted to the stabbing shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday when a nearby resident called to say that a man was writhing on the sidewalk in the 2300 block of Esmond Avenue and needed an ambulance, Lt. Mark Gagan said last week.

Police arrived within minutes and found Wilson laying in the street. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, Gagan said.

The attack appears to have started inside a vacant house, then moved to the front porch, and then out on to the street in front where Wilson's body was found, Gagan said.

Although a motive for the killing has not been determined, the house has become a popular spot for people to do drugs and sleep, Rood said. Detectives are continuing to look for several people they believe witnessed the stabbing, Rood said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Rood at (510) 620-6625.

Wilson is the city's seventh homicide victim so far this year, according to Lt. Shawn Pickett. At this time last year, the city had only two homicides.
