Young boy saved from burning car

VALLEJO, CA

The car was in a head-on accident just after 8:30 this morning on the Mare Island causeway.

The Good Samaritan stopped and saw the eight-year-old was trapped in the front seat. As he tried to get him loose, the car caught on fire. That's when the firefighter-- who just got off duty -- rushed in to help.

The two men managed to free the boy as the car became engulfed in flames.

"The interior of the car is completely burned. We're lucky this isn't a real tragedy. He would have been stuck in this car. If this had been anywhere with a longer response time, or maybe not somebody coming by, it could easily have ended up being a fatality," said William Tweedy, Vallejo Fire Department.

Three people were hurt in the crash. There is no information on the extent of the boy's injuries.
