Lloyd H. Dean

President/Chief Executive Officer, Catholic Healthcare West

Mr. Dean has proven skills in multi-hospital system leadership, cultural integration, financial turnarounds, system operations, service quality, business development and revenue growth. Since joining CHW in June 2000, the organization has gone from several years of steep annual operating losses totaling nearly $1 billion to a net income of approximately $1 billion during 2001 through 2006. With a strong personal commitment to providing health care, especially to the underserved, and to developing services and programs that enhance CHW's ability to deliver on its Mission and Values of collaboration, dignity, excellence, justice and stewardship, Mr. Dean believes in the importance of collaboration with physicians, community partners, labor groups and governmental agencies and recognizes that the success of CHW is an expression of each employee's contribution. He also believes that CHW's role in community health and community benefits is essential to continuing its healing ministry in insuring health care for all.

Previously, Mr. Dean was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Advocate Health Care, a faith-based integrated health care delivery system in Oak Brook, IL. During his tenure, Advocate Health Care was named one of the nation's Top 100 integrated networks by Modern Healthcare magazine. Prior to Advocate Health Care, he was with the Upjohn Company, where he held key executive and operational responsibilities in management positions including that of national vice president of sales and executive vice president of marketing for the Upjohn Health Care Services Division and was recognized with the prestigious W.E. Upjohn Award for his management and operational excellence.

In 2004, Mr. Dean was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth.

In 2004, he received the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area, Inc., Community Service Award and in 2005, their 100 Black Men of the Bay Area Award.

He was named by Modern Healthcare magazine as One of the 100 Most Powerful People in Health Care for 2005, 2006 and 2007, and in 2006 One of the Top 25 Minority Leaders in Healthcare.

In February 2006, Mr. Dean was appointed co-chair of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's Universal Healthcare Council and in August 2006, as co-chair to the San Francisco Health Access Program Advisory Committee. In 2006, he received the 2006 Humanitarian Award from the Bayview Hunters Point Family Resource Center.

Currently, he is vice chair elect of the Catholic Health Association USA Board where he oversees advocacy efforts for Catholic health care in the United States. He sits on their Board Executive Committee and formerly served as their Board Secretary/Treasurer.

Mr. Dean serves on the board of Wells Fargo & Company, one of the world's largest diversified financial services company and is a member of Wells Fargo & Company Board's: Compliance Committee, Finance Committee and Audit and Examination Committee.

He also serves on the Board of Mercy Housing, Inc., a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to developing, operating and financing affordable housing. Recently, he was chair of Mercy Housing's Capital Campaign.

Mr. Dean is the Partners in Care 2007 Mathies Award winner and is a recognized national speaker.
