Fishermen brace for fishing restrictions

SANTA ROSA, CA

Officials from the California Department of Fish and Game met with fishermen Wednesday to share and discuss the latest data on chinook salmon populations. The season typically begins in May.

Biologists say the number of adult salmon returning to spawn in the Sacramento River last fall was shockingly low and failed to meet the government's conservation goals.

The Pacific Fishery Management Council, which regulates West Coast fishing, is set to meet next week in Sacramento to choose management options for salmon fishing for this season. The council will set final regulations when it meets in Seattle in April.
