James Logan implements new security

UNION CITY, CA

James Logan High School is implementing new security measures and the big one that everyone is talking about is the fact that all students and teachers will need an identification badge before they can get through the door and get into class.

Security at James Logan has been under review for the last year. During that time, a freshman student was fatally shot off-campus and tried to run to the high school for safety when he died.

The school district says the goal of the new security procedures is trying to keep track of who is on campus. They also plan to designate parking today. They have places for students and staff and you have to also check in with the front office if you plan to leave the school at all during the day and use your badge in order to leave.

On the first day of the new procedures, James Logan says there will be some adjustments to be made, especially since teachers and staff will have to visually check the badges of some 4,000 students.

"We hope it won t be cumbersome, but obviously with four gates and almost 4,000 kids, you can do the math. There will be some lines today. I don't think there is any doubt about that. As the kids and staff gets used to it, it will become part of the routine, I'm sure, it will be smooth," said Rick La Plante, New Haven Unified School District.

The new security measures will be in place starting today and will last until the end of the year. Once summer break hits, the high school and New Haven Unified School District will get together and review the security procedures and say they may make adjustments for the coming fall. For today, at James Logan high, badges will be required to get in the door.
