The San Francisco 49ers said they have now been approached by developers about building a new stadium in Brisbane.

The site, along Highway 101, is about two miles south of Candlestick. Brisbane's mayor declined to comment on the possibility his city could be used as leverage in negotiations over proposed new stadiums in Santa Clara and San Francisco.

"They have their reasons for coming to Brisbane in this point in the process, and I respect the process is underway in San Francisco and Santa Clara. Since there's no real proposal on the table, we don't know what the stadium requirements would be, it's still very early in the process," said Brisbane Mayor Michael Barnes.

In a short statement, the Niners say they are still focused on building in Santa Clara, and working with San Francisco on Hunters Point, but that, "we will continue to explore alternative sites throughout the Bay Area to accomplish our goal of keeping the 49ers in the Bay Area."
