Bay Area Memorial Day events

SAN FRANCISCO
Formal parade at 10:30 a.m. from the Main Post at the Presidio to the San Francisco National Cemetery. The 140th official Memorial Day ceremony begins at 11 a.m. The ceremony honors the 90th anniversary of World War I battles, with music by the Army Reserve's 91st Division Band. A tribute to the late Rep. Tom Lantos by Rep. Jackie Speier.

Memorial Day Interfaith Service, noon, at Main Post Chapel, Presidio. Remarks by Andrew Carroll, editor of books featuring letters home by soldiers. Carroll will have a book signing and reception at 4 p.m. A $10 donation benefits the interfaith chapel.

Lost Boat Ceremony, 5 p.m. at the Pampanito, the historic submarine at Pier 45 at Fisherman's Wharf. Ceremony commemorates the 52 American World War II submarines on "eternal patrol." Retired Navy Capt. Shepherd Jenks, navigator for the Nautilus, the world's first nuclear submarine, is the speaker.

SAN MATEO COUNTY
San Bruno: Memorial ceremony at 11 a.m. for the more than 138,000 veterans and their families interred in Golden Gate National Cemetery. Graves decorated.

Colma: 1 p.m. 12th annual ceremony featuring an "Avenue of the Flags," music by 50-piece El Camino High School symphonic band, address by Rep. Jackie Speier at Cypress Lawn Cemetery.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY
Milpitas: 9 a.m. ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park.

Saratoga: Saratoga Foothill Club honors all residents of Saratoga with a remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m. at Madronia Cemetery. Flag ceremony and wreath-laying at a memorial arch at Blaney Plaza. There are 869 Saratoga veterans buried in the Madronia Cemetery.

San Jose: The United Veterans Council of Santa Clara County ceremony at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 11 a.m. Local Boy Scouts lay wreaths. Graves date back to Civil War veterans.

ALAMEDA COUNTY
Hayward: Hayward Municipal Band music and commemorative ceremony, including a fighter jet fly-by at 11 a.m., Lone Tree Cemetery.

Hayward: 1:30 p.m, at the Chapel of the Chimes, Mission Boulevard. Kevin Godchaux, whose mother founded MOM, a Castro Valley military family support group, is the main speaker.

Alameda: Ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier Hornet at Alameda Point, 1 p.m. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Craig Bone is the main speaker.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
Walnut Creek: Memorial service in Civic Park, 10 a.m. with a Marine Corps Honor guard. A memorial plaque will honor Cpl. Sean Langevin, a Walnut Creek resident killed at the age of 23 in Afghanistan in autumn. Also, a concert by the Walnut Creek Concert Band.

MARIN COUNTY
San Rafael: Marin County's 89th annual Memorial Day commemoration begins at 9 a.m. at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Band concert and a color guard. The main speaker is Mary Jane Burke, county superintendent of schools.

Mill Valley: Annual parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at Old Mill Park and heads down Miller Avenue to Tamalpais High School.

San Rafael: 11 a.m. outdoor memorial Mass at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery.

Point Reyes: 2 p.m. ceremony at the historic graveyard near the G Ranch in the Point Reyes National Seashore.
