Police are having a major crackdown on drivers, speeders, red light runners and any other violators in order to protect the public. There is no doubt that 19th Avenue is a very dangerous road, and that is why State Senator Leland Yee has a bill already approved by the State Senate, expected to be approved by the Assembly and the governor, which will double the fines on the avenue.
There have been 800 crashes between 2000 and 2005 with 1,200 injured and 12 killed.
Some are saying the change is good.
"People should slow down here, but they race through. I see people speeding, making left turns when they shouldn't - all kinds of crazy things. I think they should crack down," said Jim Collins, San Francisco resident.
Caltrans officials are saying that the speed limit along 19th Avenue has been lowered from Lincoln to Eucalyptus from 35 mph to 30 mph. The crackdown will be enforced Wednesday morning.
