Santa Rosa Mayor Bob Blanchard died early this morning at his home, a spokesman confirmed. He was 70.

Blanchard had been battling cancer and announced his resignation from his position as mayor May 28. His resignation would have been effective Tuesday, according to his spokesman Herb Williams.

Blanchard was elected to the City Council in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. He had served as mayor since December 2006.

A replacement for mayor has not been named and may be decided Tuesday, according to Williams.

A memorial service will not be scheduled, Williams said. Anyone who wishes to send flowers or make a donation may do so to the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Hall, according to Williams.
