A group of suspected gang members allegedly beat a man in the face with a baseball bat in Antioch Sunday and attempted to shoot him, but the gun malfunctioned, police reported today.

Shortly before 6 p.m. police responded to a report of an assault in an apartment at 3915 Delta Fair Blvd., where they found the victim, an Antioch resident, suffering major facial injuries.

Witnesses told officers that four to five men, all believed to be between 18 and 22 years old, had arrived at the apartment and gotten into an argument with the victim, Antioch police Cpl. Mike Hulsey said.

Witnesses reported seeing the victim and the suspects exchange gang signs and insults and then the men attacked the victim, hitting him several times in the face with a baseball bat.

One of the suspects allegedly tried to shoot the victim with a handgun, but the gun didn't work and they fled the scene in a vehicle, Hulsey said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with possible facial fractures.

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call Antioch police at (925) 778-2441.
