Cindy McCain shows up as something of a mystery. Nearly six in 10 of those polled say they don't know much about her. Only about a-third are clueless about Michelle Obama.
Those with an opinion are about evenly split on the two: 30 percent like Michelle Obama and 27 percent prefer Cindy McCain. At the same time, twice as many have an unfavorable view of Michelle Obama, 35 percent.
Michelle Obama does better with unmarried people and college grads. Cindy McCain is seen more favorably by older people, those who are married and the more affluent.
The 44-year-old Obama is a lawyer and hospital administrator. McCain, who's 54, is heiress to an Arizona beer distributorship.
