A new study finds television may hurt a child's development, even when they are not watching.

The University of Massachusetts study found young children who played in a room where the television was on had more difficulty concentrating. They played for shorter periods of time and had difficulty focusing on the play activity.

Children who played in a room with the television off appeared more focused. Those children were able to stay with the same activity for twice the amount of time.

The study is published in the current issue of Child Development.
