The Toyota Tacoma received Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's best rating after the air bags provided good protection.

The Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger each got marginal ratings.

The Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon got a poor rating after the barrier pushed through the side of the truck.

General Motors says the Colorado and Canyon do "meet or exceed all federal safety standards and have performed well in other tests."

Chrysler says the Dodge Dakota has received the highest federal safety ratings. Ford said the Ranger has an excellent safety track record. Nissan says all of its trucks are designed to meet or surpass government standards.
