Man killed in collision with wrong-way driver

OAKLAND, CA

A 23-year-old Antioch woman driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling west in the No. 1 lane of eastbound Highway 580 near Keller Avenue, according to the CHP.

The woman, driving the wrong direction on the highway, approached a 31-year-old Stockton man driving a 2005 Honda Accord east in the No. 1 lane of eastbound Highway 580, the CHP reported.

Both drivers attempted to avoid each other, but failed and collided head-on in the No. 1 lane.

The man driving the Honda, identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as Ruel Balangue, was killed in the collision. The wrong-way driver was transported to Highland Hospital with moderate injuries.

All eastbound lanes were closed at about 1:55 a.m., with the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes reopening around 2:35 a.m. The remaining lanes were reopened around 3:30 a.m.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
