San Francisco firefighters have controlled a two-alarm blaze that broke out in a four-story apartment building in the city's Pacific Heights neighborhood this afternoon, a fire lieutenant said.

The fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. in the first-floor storage area of an apartment at 2335 Washington St., fire Lt. Ken Smith said.

The flames were contained to the storage area, although smoke rose to the upper floors.

"We had a lot of heavy black smoke in the hallways on the upper floors," Smith said.

One apartment unit sustained some damage and the fire was controlled at about 2:15 p.m., Smith said.

There were no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and Smith did not yet have a damage estimate.
