Bay Area comedians remember Bernie Mac

OAKLAND, CA

The free comedy show began at 2 p.m. at Arroyo Viejo Park, 7701 Krause St., and people of all ages were invited to attend. Comedian Mark Curry was the master of ceremonies for the event, which is themed "Where there is Laughter, there is Hope."

Oakland City Councilwoman Desley Brooks, who is co-sponsoring the show, said it offers comedians a chance to give back to the community they grew up in.

In addition to comedy, the show included live music and community activities. The event was also aimed to educate attendees about sickle cell anemia, which organizers say is the most common inherited disease in blacks.

Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland conducted sickle cell screenings and educational materials were be provided.

U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee was scheduled to speak at the event.
