Dan Johnson, owner of Johnson's Colonial BBQ in Virginia Beach, shares his award-winning recipe for moist and delicious barbeque chicken.

Johnson's BBQ - Grilled Chicken Recipe

  • One whole chicken, cut up
  • One half cup vegetable oil (oil is used to make rub stick to the chicken better)

The Rub:

  • Half tablespoon garlic salt
  • Half cup paprika
  • One fourth cup kosher salt finely ground
  • One fourth cup brown sugar
  • Two tablespoons mustard powder
  • One fourth cup chili powder
  • One fourth cup ground cumin
  • Two tablespoons black ground pepper

Mix all ingredients

Put veggie oil all over the chicken

Put rub all over chicken

Let chicken sit 20 minutes to absorb spices

Put chicken on the grill

Secret is low and slow heat

Add Hickory wood and small piece of apple wood to coals

The combination of flavored wood adds smoked and sweet taste to the chicken
