Bush bans lead in toys

President Bush has signed a bill banning lead from children's toys.

It establishes the world's toughest standard for lead in toys.

The bill also increases the authority and budget of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Forty-five million toys and children's items were recalled last year, many of them made in China using lead paint.

The bill also bans phthalates, a chemical used to make plastic products softer and more flexible.
