The woman awoke that Wednesday morning around 1:45 a.m. to find a man in his 20s in her studio apartment, police Capt. Dan DeSmidt said today.
The man fled after the woman woke up, and she immediately called the campus Department of Public Safety, which notified Belmont police.
The woman and a small group of students and staff were living on the campus, located at 1500 Ralston Ave. in Belmont, when the incident occurred before the beginning of the fall semester, DeSmidt said.
Investigators were unable to find any indication that the man forced entry into the apartment, and nothing appeared to have been stolen, DeSmidt said. There was also no indication that the victim, who was uninjured, knew the man.
The suspect's reasons for entering the apartment remain unclear, DeSmidt said.
Police today released a sketch of the suspect, said DeSmidt. He said police waited to release information about the intruder to the public until they had all the facts.
This week marks the start of the fall semester at the university, and although the Aug. 13 incident was isolated, student safety is a concern, DeSmidt said.
"We're hoping that somebody on campus or in the community can help us to identify this person," he said.
DeSmidt reminded residents to lock and secure doors and windows, a practice some let slip during warmer months.
The suspect is described as a light-skinned man in his 20s standing about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a thin build and a patch of light-colored hair on his chin. He was wearing a blue or black hooded pullover sweatshirt and dark colored pants.
