Aerial search for South Bay mosquitos

A Santa Clara County Vector Control District plane will search a 105-square-mile area for mosquito-breeding sources today to help prevent West Nile virus.

The plane will search for sources such as neglected pools, which can produce millions of mosquitoes, in portions of Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, Stanford and Sunnyvale.

Vector control technicians will work with property owners to resolve the problems immediately.

The county's first two aerial surveys identified more than 600 properties with green pools, according to the control district. The control district can enforce fines up to $1,000 per day for failure to abate a public health nuisance.
