Couple killed after flash flood hits canyon

WALNUT CREEK, CA

The incident happened Wednesday but their bodies were recovered Thursday by the Utah Highway Patrol.

The husband and wife victims -- Gordon and Kathy Chapple -- were on a family vacation hiking the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Gordon Chapple was a well known nature photographer.

According to Garfield County spokeswoman Becki Branson, the guides were very experienced. She says the canyons in the area are very dangerous to explore because they can take a long time to hike into and are hard to get out of if danger strikes. She says people take their lives into their hands when they go into these slot canyons.
