Sunnyvale has named Gary Luebbers as its new city manager. He is expected to assume the post in early December.

Luebbers is currently the city manager of West Jordan, Utah, and has held that job since 2000, the longest term in that city's history, Sunnyvale officials said.

He is an Air Force retiree and spent 13 years as assistant city manager and general services director for the California city of Redlands, where he then became city manager for seven years.

Luebbers saw West Jordan grow from a population of 75,000 to 102,000, and helped attract a 2 million-square-foot commercial development, Sunnyvale officials said.

In a prepared statement Luebbers said of Sunnyvale, "It will be a wonderful place to live and a city I will be proud to manage."
