Students are planting handmade pinwheels in the front yard of a San Francisco middle school.

Each year about 200 students at A.P. Giannini Middle School in the Sunset District create the pinwheels with their own artwork and messages of peace.

The art is part of "Pinwheels for Peace," begun by two Florida teachers in 2005.

More than one million pinwheels are expected to be planted in public places across the country to honor International Peace Day.
