Community colleges ban smoking on campus

Smoking is now prohibited in all areas of the Mission College campus in Santa Clara and West Valley College in Saratoga with the exception of parking lots that are least 25 feet away from buildings and pathways, according to the district.

"The policy is the result of a well-developed, thoroughly researched shared governance effort on the part of the entire campus community," Director of Student Health Services Becky Perelli said. "This is what the college community wanted - a smoke free campus and it's an important step toward improving the health and safety of our students, employees and community."

The school district is also offering assistance for students interested in quitting smoking. Anyone interested in assistance should contact the Health Services smoking cessation support program.
