Flags at the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District as well as at fire stations across the country will be lowered to half-staff Sunday in honor of two Contra Costa County firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2007.

Capt. Matt Burton and Scott Desmond, a fire engineer, died July 21, 2007, battling a house fire that also killed two residents.

The U.S. Capitol, the White House and other governmental buildings will also lower their flags to half-staff, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokeswoman Emily Hopkins.

On Oct. 16, 2001, President Bush approved legislation requiring the U.S. flag to be lowered to half-staff on all federal buildings to memorialize fallen firefighters.
