'Emergency' cell phones for Livermore residents

LIVERMORE, CA

The district is participating in the national "Secure the Call" program, which takes old cell phones and converts them to make emergency calls only.

Residents can now request such phones from the district, and will also receive a charger and instructions, district spokeswoman Lea Blevins said.

The phones are being distributed through the district's Senior Services program, but residents do not need to be seniors to sign up, Blevins said.

Those interested can call (925) 373-5760 or visit the Robert Livermore Community Center at 4444 East Ave. in Livermore.

Donated cell phones and chargers may be dropped off at the Senior Services Center from 9 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
