Don't be surprised if you see a lot more kids and their parents walking home from school. That's because today is "National Walk to School Day."

ABC7 News caught up with more than 350 children and parents who were part of a group walking to Hoover Elementary School in Oakland.

One of the parents taking part in the day's walk and rally said this is critically important for kids living in that area.

"This area used to have a lot of crime and safety issues and so in the past the community has really rallied around the community, so Hoover has a lot of strong community base around parents, community members who really rally around Hoover to ensure it is safe," said Hoover Elementary School Principal Laresha Martin.

This is the ninth year for the national Walk to School day program.
