Fairfield police received calls just after noon of shots fired on Waterman Boulevard at the on-ramp for westbound Interstate Highway 80. Responding officers found the Vallejo teen suffering a single gunshot wound to the head, police said.

The victim was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment of the wound, which police said is not considered life-threatening.

Police said an investigation revealed several people in at least three vehicles were stopped at the intersection when an altercation erupted. One suspect is believed to have confronted the victim and fired several shots at him, police said.

Police have not established a motive for the shooting but said it does not appear to be gang-related.

The shooting closed down the on-ramp for several hours.
