In search of the best slow cookers

SAN FRANCISCO

How convenient to drop in food in the morning and return to a complete meal. Good Housekeeping went in search of the best slow cookers.

"We measured their temperatures to see that they got up to a safe temperature quickly, and that then they didn't overcook, or boil the food. Some just didn't heat quickly enough, and then some boiled the food, leading to food that tasted overcooked and mushy," said Sharon Franke, Good Housekeeping Institute.

Getting kudos is the All-Clad 6.5 quart electric slow cooker. It got high marks for its electronic controls. It automatically goes into a keep warm setting when done. Smaller families may want the Hamilton Beach Multi 3 in one slow cooker. Bowls come in 2, 4 and 6 quart sizes.

"This crock pot brand slow cooker is a great value. You can program it to cook for a specific amount of time and then automatically switch to a keep warm setting," said Sharon Franke, Good Housekeeping Institute.
