Lt. Gov. protests against budget cuts

SACRAMENTO, CA

They are angry over the governor's call for $4.5 billion in cuts to help bridge a massive budget gap.

Thursday, Gov. Schwarzenegger proposed cutting funds for public schools and health services to help meet a $11.2 billion budget deficit. He also proposed a one day per month unpaid furlough for state employees.

"The furlough of state workers I think is a mistake," Garamendi said. "We have already in this year taken a 10 percent cut in virtually every state program except for public safety programs."

Schwarzenegger also wants to temporarily increase the state sales tax by 1.5 cents. He has convened an emergency session of the legislature to deal with the budget shortfall.
