Oakland police car hits deer

Airbags saved two Oakland police officers from injury this morning when their vehicle struck a deer on westbound Interstate Highway 580, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident was reported at about 4:15 a.m. just west of Seminary Avenue on Highway 580, according to CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt.

The officers were driving from Santa Rita Jail when their vehicle struck a large deer in the roadway, Van Eckhardt said.

The vehicle's airbags deployed upon impact, and although the police vehicle was damaged, both officers escaped without injury, according to Van Eckhardt.
