Alternative to throwing out old Christmas trees

SAN FRANCISCO

Through the Dream of a Green Christmas program, city residents can purchase a tree to bring home that gets planted on city streets after Christmas.

For $90 live trees can be purchased and picked up in December. Once Christmas is over, the trees will be picked up and planted on neighborhood streets.

Environment Department officials say the popularity of the programs is growing and trees sold out in past years.

Those who wish to purchase a live tree can register between now and Dec. 8 at www.sfenvironment.org/greenchristmas. Trees can be picked up 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Green Christmas tree lot at Civic Center Plaza. They can also be picked up at the Friends of the Urban Forest offices between Dec. 8 and 12.
