Fireplace bricks collected in Tracy abuse case

Police said that a 16-year-old boy spent more than a year being shackled and beaten at a couple's Tracy home before managing to escape on Monday. The warrant says that in addition to being beaten with a baseball bat, the boy was also cut.

Police seized several knives and a master lock and keys from the home. Other evidence included a fireplace grate and bricks from the fire-place hearth.

The warrant says one of the suspects purposely lit a fire when the boy was chained to the fireplace, where they say he spent most of his time. He suffered significant burns to his arm.

Michael Schumacher and his wife Kelly Layne Lau were formally charged Thursday with 13 felony counts. A third suspect in the case, Caren Ramirez, was not in court.
