Driver strikes three Oakland police cars

OAKLAND, CA

Officers were getting off work at about 2:40 a.m. on Monday when they heard a crash in the 400 block of 6th Street. A driver was going the wrong way on 6th Street towards Broadway and sideswiped three Oakland squad cars.

The suspect was driving in a Black Honda and led police on a short, but high speed chase - which never got more then a few blocks away from the police station. The chase went down to Clay Street and back, but when he went the wrong way down 7th Street - he crashed his car into a Pontiac - which in turn hit another car. A few minutes later he was taken into custody.

The driver's name has not been released but he will face many charges.

"Obviously he was under the influence of something - I would think to be running into police cars, and blatantly running into them, and to be driving as quickly and as fast as he was," said Sgt. Paul Balzouman, Oakland police department.

The driver, a 30-year-old Oakland man, was arrested on suspicion of vandalism and DUI. He was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. There were no other injuries.
