Throw a pie; help feed a family

SANTA CLARA, CA

The company's employees will pay $10 for a chance to throw a cream-filled pie at one of six executive volunteers, or $25 to smash a pie in an executive face at close range, according to a company spokesman.

The event, which is scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m. on the firm's Santa Clara campus at 2801-2881 Scott Boulevard, will raise money to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank, which provides assistance to low-income residents of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

The pie throw is one of several events held throughout the year that constitute Applied Materials' North America Food Drive, which reportedly raised more than $1 million for food banks around the country in 2007.
