Report: Police admit ignoring Bailey witness

Oakland police admit they made a mistake by ignoring a witness account in the shooting death of journalist Chauncey Bailey last year.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the witness is a woman who worked at Your Black Muslim Bakery. She claims the bakery's leader, Yusef Bey IV, was upset with Bailey for reporting on the group's problems and gloated when Bailey was shot.

The woman also claims to have overheard a phone call in which Bey and another man were checking on Bailey's whereabouts the day before he was killed. She made the statements to police the day another bakery follower Devaughndre Broussard was arrested in connection with Bailey's death.

That information was not given to prosecutors until two months ago. Bey has not been charged in the case, but is awaiting trial in an unrelated kidnap-torture case.
