Menlo Park fire holds holiday safety demo

December 10, 2008 7:10:42 PM PST
The Menlo Park Fire Department staged its annual Christmas tree disaster demonstration Thursday.

The demonstration simulated the dangers of allowing Christmas trees, candles, and heaters to burn unattended.

Since 2003 alone, two East Palo Alto children and an Atherton man have been killed in Christmas Eve fires.

The key tip is the most basic. Make sure that you cut an inch or two off the bottom of the tree when you bring it home to insure that it gets sufficient water. If you're using an artificial tree, make sure it is labeled "fire resistant."
