New eco-friendly Gemini ferry launched

SAN FRANCISCO

Gemini is the first of a fleet of ferries to boost the Bay Area's emergency response capability and expand water transport. It is 10 times cleaner than existing Bay Area ferries.

Officials say Gemini was designed to be the most environmentally friendly vessel in the world. Gemini uses a blend of bio-diesel and low sulfur diesel fuel.

The catamaran-style ferry also carries special sonar equipment to prevent it from hitting marine mammals and debris in the bay.

The ferry goes into service on the Alameda-Oakland and Tiburon ferry routes next month.

It will carry 149 passengers and up to 34 bicycles.
