Three found dead in car near Squaw Valley

Three people were found dead Tuesday; investigators believe they were victims of carbon monoxide poisoning as they tried to keep warm.

Lacey Sutton, 22, Sara McCullah, 21, and an unnamed 17-year-old female from Loma Rica were found dead in a car near the Squaw Valley USA ski resort. McCullah's mother, Cindy Walczak, said McCullah and Sutton had moved to the area from Marysville to find work at the resort.

An initial investigation by the Placer County Sheriff indicates the three had been sleeping in the car Tuesday night and that snow may have blocked the car's tail pipe, allowing the deadly gas to back up into the passenger compartment.

About 500 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning, with more of the deaths occurring in the winter, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
