Bucking the trend during this recession, Dow Chemical and K2 Pure Solutions announced Wednesday they are going to build a new plant at Dow's Pittsburg site in the East Bay.

There will be about 200 new construction jobs and 40 more jobs to operate the bleach plant when it is up and running in 2010.

The announcement comes as Dow revealed plans to close its styrene plant in Pittsburg cutting 20 workers.

We're lucky here in Pittsburg in that we make primarily agricultural products and people will always be growing crops and needing our products to protect those crops," Dow Chemical spokesperson Patty Deutsche said.

The $100 million bleach plant will provide raw materials for water treatment plants as well as crop protection in Northern California.
