Public works project will bring jobs

SAN FRANCISCO

It's a $1.9 billion upgrade of the region's water system -- pipelines, dams and tunnels that will improve the Hetch Hetchy water delivery system.

"It seems almost remarkable under the circumstances that a municipality, an agency, the Public Utilities Commission, could be distributed right at the time when the rest of us seemed to be focused on action in Sacramento where they've actually pulled back on $4 billion in projects," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

The projects are expected to create around 28,000 jobs over the next year-and-a-half.
