The office of state Controller John Chiang says he suffered a mild heart attack.

Chiang had checked himself into a Texas hospital the day after Christmas because of chest pains he suffered while visiting family. He was discharged on New Year's Day.

Jacob Roper, a spokesman for Chiang, says California's chief fiscal watchdog is in good condition and will be back at his Sacramento office sometime next week. The 46-year-old is returning to California today.

While in the hospital, the Democrat sent a letter to state agencies warning them his office will be forced to start issuing IOUs as soon as February if the state's budget deficit isn't solved.

Roper says Chiang was in daily contact with the office.

He says doctors prescribed rest and follow-up evaluation.
