Alan David Hurwitz, 67, who has addresses in Eureka and Ferndale, is suspected of robbing a Redwood Credit Union in San Rafael on Dec. 11, a Wachovia bank in Palo Alto on Dec. 12 and the Liberty Mutual Bank in Medford, Ore. on Dec. 30, Santa Rosa police Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.
Medford police have a warrant out for Hurwitz's arrest and Hurwitz should be considered armed and dangerous, Banayat said.
Authorities believe Hurwitz may be the "Zombie Bandit" who robbed 18 banks in four states in the Midwest.
A Chicago Sun Times article on March 17, 1992 said 52-year-old Alan David Hurwitz, a former Michigan educator, was arrested in a motel in Fowlerville, Mich. near Lansing.
Other Midwest newspaper articles said Hurwitz was called the "Zombie Bandit" because of his bulging eyes, pockmarked face deadpan expression and mechanical manner during the heists.
Phone calls prompted by an "America's Most Wanted" television episode led to Hurwitz's arrest, the FBI said in the news articles.
Hurwitz was convicted and served about 12 years in prison, according to federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley. He was released in 2004.
