Checks in the mail for Wachovia customers

SAN FRANCISCO

It seems some customers have been throwing away the checks thinking it was part of some scam.

The checks are actually part of a settlement reached between Wachovia and its federal regulator, the Office of Comptroller and Currency.

It seems telemarketers were deceiving Wachovia customers into giving them their bank account information, then debiting money directly from their accounts.

The feds ruled Wachovia did not do enough to stop it, and ordered the bank to repay its customers a total of $150 million.

740,000 customers are owed an average of $200 each.
