Police pursuit ends in head-on collision

OAKLAND, CA

The collision was reported on the single-lane elevated flyover at about 2:45 a.m. after a vehicle accessed the one-way thoroughfare traveling the wrong direction, eastbound on the westbound approach, and collided head-on with another vehicle, CHP Officer Marc Johnston said.

A Sig-alert issued at 2:49 a.m. was canceled at 5:11 a.m., CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

The vehicle is believed to have been carjacked, and the driver and as many as three passengers were being pursued by Oakland police when the crash occurred, a patrol officer said.

The crash, the pursuit and possible criminal activity that preceded it are under investigation by the Oakland Police Department, Johnston said.

Someone involved in the incident was arrested and taken to Highland Hospital for major injuries, but it was unclear who it was, Caggiano said.

Four juveniles were transported to Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland with minor injuries, but it was unknown what vehicle they had been in.
